Command Conquer Renegade Jun 2026

From the outset, Renegade faced a massive design hurdle: How do you make a tank-heavy strategy game work as a shooter? Most FPS games of the time were corridor crawlers. Westwood wanted open battlefields. They wanted players to see the iconic Construction Yard, the Hand of Nod, and the Obelisk of Light not as icons on a map, but as massive structures towering over them.

The result is a game that plays like Battlefield mixed with StarCraft . A single "Hotwire" (GDI engineer) can hide behind a wall and repair a damaged building, keeping it alive while a Nod "Stealth Tank" unloads missiles from a hilltop. Players coordinate to sneak a "Sacred" (Nod technician) into the enemy base on a captured Humvee to plant an Ion Cannon beacon, calling down a satellite strike on the GDI Weapons Factory.
