The scene opens on a hot Verona street. Benvolio warns Mercutio that the Capulets are about and that the heat makes tempers flare. Tybalt arrives, looking for Romeo to duel him for crashing the Capulet ball. When Romeo refuses to fight (now secretly married to Juliet, Tybalt’s cousin), Mercutio steps in. Romeo physically tries to stop the fight; as he does, Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm. Mercutio dies, cursing both families. Enraged, Romeo kills Tybalt. The Prince arrives, and despite Benvolio’s plea for mercy, Prince Escalus banishes Romeo from Verona on pain of death.
