NORM refers to radioactive materials that exist naturally in subsurface geological formations. When oil and gas are extracted, produced water, scale, and sludge can bring these radioactive elements—such as radium-226 and radium-228—to the surface. Over time, these materials can accumulate in pipes, separators, tanks, and other production equipment, posing health and environmental risks.
