The inciting incident occurs when Spirit, driven by curiosity, encounters a camp of U.S. Cavalry soldiers. Despite his wariness, he is captured and taken to a fort, where he encounters "The Colonel," a cold, calculating antagonist who represents the industrialization and rigid order of the expanding civilization. The Colonel attempts to break Spirit—starving him, branding him, and forcing him to be ridden—but the stallion refuses to submit.
