The narrative begins with a duck who falls in love with a melancholic prince named Mytho. To help him, she is transformed by the mysterious writer Drosselmeyer into a human girl, Ahiru (Japanese for "duck"), and eventually into the legendary ballerina . Her mission is to retrieve the shattered shards of Mytho's heart, which he broke to seal away a monstrous Great Raven.
In one of the most chilling arcs, Mytho recovers the emotion of "sorrow." He immediately falls into a catatonic depression, realizing how much pain he has been missing. The show asks a terrifying question: Is it kind to force someone to feel sorrow?
