The set opens with what many critics consider the first "classic" Weather Report album. Mysterious Traveller marks a turning point. It is the album where Joe Zawinul’s vision of dense, orchestral layers began to fully eclipse the "collective improvisation" model of their early years.

Mr. Gone is the controversial child of the collection. Following the massive success of Heavy Weather , the band leaned into R&B, vocal tracks, and studio experimentation. Critics panned it at the time (Rolling Stone called it "pretentious"), but history has been kinder. Tracks like "The Pursuit of the Woman with the Feathered Hat" and the soulful "And Then" (featuring a rare vocal by Zawinul) are now viewed as a brave step away from formula.
