Before this moment, the saga was a simple story of good vs. evil. Luke was the hero; Vader was the monster who killed his father. The twist complicated the narrative DNA of the entire saga. Suddenly, the villain was a fallen hero, and the hero carried the blood of his enemy.

While George Lucas created the universe, it was director Irvin Kershner who gave The Empire Strikes Back its soul. Lucas, exhausted from the production of the first film, handed the reins to his former USC professor. Kershner brought a character-actor’s sensibility to a special effects blockbuster.

Yoda’s lessons are the spiritual core of the film. When he lifts the X-wing from the swamp, he delivers the franchise’s thesis: "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter." But crucially, Luke fails. He abandons his training because he sees a vision of his friends in pain. He chooses attachment over duty. In most blockbusters, this would be the right choice.
