On page 32 of the manual, Juki explains that the "Needle Up/Down" button is also a memory setter. If you hold it for 3 seconds, the machine locks the needle position. If your machine stops with the needle down when you don't want it to, you accidentally activated this lock. The manual says: Press and hold the button again to release.

Start at "4" for general cotton. The dial numbers go up (tight) and down (loose). If you see looping on the bottom of your fabric, the top tension is too loose. If the bobbin thread shows on top, the top tension is too tight.
