To understand the brilliance of Season 4, one must look at the foundation laid in previous years. Season 3 ended with the infamous "Punch Heard 'Round the World" (or rather, the wine glass throw) involving Kristen Doute and the dissolution of the Stassi Schroeder and Jax Taylor romance. As Season 4 began, the cast was fractured. Shay is clearly struggling with addiction to pain pills, and Scheana’s ultimatum— "You need to stop drinking and partying or I'm leaving" —feels heartbreakingly real. This storyline is difficult to watch but adds a layer of tragedy to the usual trashy fun. It is the season where fake tans meet real therapy
Unlike later seasons that drag a single plot (like "PumpRules" or "TomTom"), Season 4 has a beautiful rhythm of subplots.
