The movie takes us through Pele's journey as he joins the youth academy of Santos FC, a Brazilian football club, at the age of 11. Under the guidance of coach Vicente Feola, Pele's skills are honed, and he quickly rises through the ranks. The film's portrayal of Pele's early struggles, including his experiences with racism and poverty, adds depth to the narrative and highlights the challenges he faced on his path to success.

The narrative follows his journey to the Santos football club and his eventual selection for the Brazilian national team. A central conflict in the film is the tension between Brazil's traditional, expressive "Ginga" style and the more rigid, European-style tactics that coaches tried to impose following Brazil's devastating loss in the 1950 World Cup.
