Solatorobo was a passion project for studio CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama. It was conceived as a spiritual successor to Tail Concerto , a cult classic PlayStation 1 game. While Tail Concerto featured a cat-piloting mecha, Solatorobo shifted the focus to canines, creating a world populated by "Caninu" (dog-people) and "Felineko" (cat-people).

Players step into the boots of Red Savarin, a freelance hunter of the Caninu race. Red is a relatable protagonist—charming, brash, and always looking for the next paycheck. He is accompanied by his sister, Chocolat, who manages their airship, the Asmodeus , and handles mission briefings.
The world is a floating continent archipelago called the (formerly the Kingdom of Ferre). Below lies a forbidden zone: the Lowlands (old world). Above is the sky, and ancient legends speak of the La Lune (a moon-like planetoid) and the Order of the Golden Triangles .
