Modern archivists have taken 35mm nitrate negatives from the 1920s and scanned them at 4K and 2K resolutions. Downscaling these to 720p offers a "Goldilocks" solution: significantly better than the grainy YouTube re-uploads of 2007, but without the massive file sizes of 4GB+ 4K files.

While most 1920s films were shot in studios, "silent movies" like The Lodger (1927) directed by Alfred Hitchcock, feature crucial location shots of 1920s London fog and rooftops. Hitchcock’s Blackmail (1929) includes a chase scene through the British Museum.
