The film is a modern American adaptation of the true story of Hachikō, an Akita dog from 1920s Japan.
The story originates from Japan in the 1920s. Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor at the University of Tokyo, adopted an Akita puppy named Hachikō. Every day, Hachikō would greet the professor at the Shibuya Station at the end of the day. In May 1925, Professor Ueno suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and passed away, never returning to the station. However, Hachikō continued to wait. For over nine years, the dog returned to the station every day, hoping to see his friend. When Hachikō died in 1935, his legacy was cemented as the ultimate symbol of loyalty. A bronze statue was erected at Shibuya Station, which remains a popular meeting spot today.
