The story follows (Shah Rukh Khan), a 40-year-old bachelor from Mumbai who embarks on a journey to Rameswaram to immerse his late grandfather's ashes. His plan to ditch the mission and party in Goa with friends is derailed when he helps a young woman, Meenalochini "Meenamma" Azhagusundaram (Deepika Padukone), board the moving train.
Launched to connect the national capital with the automotive and IT hub of the South, the train traverses through six states: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and finally Tamil Nadu. For migrant workers, students, and tourists, the (via the Grand Southern Trunk route) is a mobile home.
