Vicente is not a good man. He is a predator. But is rape punishable by forced sexual reassignment surgery? Does Robert have the right to condemn a man to live inside a woman’s skin for eternity?
Unlike Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown or Volver , is visually mute. Cinematographer José Luis Alcaine uses hard, clinical light. The mansion is a museum of memory—filled with sculptures of the dead wife, surveillance screens, and sterile surgical tools. la piel que habito
Watch how Banderas plays Robert: gentle hands, a soft voice, the tenderness of a god arranging petals. He kisses Vera’s shoulder. He dresses her. He weeps over her. And all the while, she is counting the days, memorizing the layout of the house, clinging to the memory of being Vicente. The film asks: If you change everything about a person’s exterior—their sex, their face, their very dermis—do they still exist? Vicente is not a good man
Cinematographer José Luis Alcaine uses a palette of clinical blues and greys, creating a sterile, frighteningly immaculate atmosphere in Ledgard’s laboratory. Does Robert have the right to condemn a
Yes, there is melodrama. Yes, there is a scene involving a tiger mask and a wedding dress. But La piel que habito is also a meditation on his own career. Almodóvar has spent decades celebrating transgressive bodies, queer desires, and the performance of identity. Here, he turns that celebration into a horror show: what happens when transformation is forced ? What happens when surgery is not liberation but a cage?

La piel que habito : The Horror of Being Made, Not Born
I’m not a trans woman myself, but honestly I love the idea of trans women walking around showing off their bulge with confidence. It’s not necessarily just because the outline of their penis is visible (though that is a welcomed sight). For me it’s the body confidence; it’s them not being afraid to show who they are. That type of confidence makes them so much sexier. When I see a trans woman with a visible penis bulge, what it tells me is she is comfortable in her own skin and doesn’t care if people can see what’s between her legs. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with that either. This is 2025 not 1975. The world has dramatically changed and those who are trans shouldn’t have to hide anymore. If they want to walk around with a bulge, great! I think of the actress Hunter Schafer who is not only stunningly beautiful, but loves to flaunt her bulge quite often. I’m all for it! More trans women should be like Hunter. If everyone does it, the amount of isolated incidents drops significantly and seeing it becomes the norm.
