Since Citylights is an official remake, comparisons are inevitable. The original, directed by Sean Ellis, is set in Manila and features a similar father-daughter dynamic. However, Mehta "Indianizes" the story. He replaces the Filipino sense of community with the Indian hierarchical caste system.
