By 1420, the French were broken. The Treaty of Troyes was one of the most astonishing documents in medieval history: Henry V was named heir to the French throne, disinheriting the Dauphin (the French prince). He married Catherine of Valois, the French king’s daughter. For a brief, brilliant moment, it seemed that England and France would be united under one crown.

In the pantheon of British monarchy, few figures loom as large or shine as brightly as Henry V. Immortalized by William Shakespeare as the "star of England" and remembered by historians as the warrior king who broke the French, Henry’s legacy is a complex tapestry of military brilliance, political shrewdness, and pious ruthlessness. His reign was brief—barely nine years—but in that short time, he reshaped the course of the Hundred Years' War and defined the medieval ideal of kingship.

Perhaps the most famous speech in all of Shakespeare, this is delivered before the Battle of Agincourt when the English are vastly outnumbered. It’s perfect if you want to play a leader who builds brotherhood and honor. Inspiration, brotherhood, and quiet confidence. Henry V

Following his conquest of Normandy, Henry achieved a diplomatic masterstroke. This treaty recognized him as the heir and regent of France, effectively disinheriting the French Dauphin.

After Agincourt, Henry did not rest. Between 1417 and 1419, he methodically conquered Normandy—town by town, castle by castle. He learned to conduct siege warfare as deftly as he fought open battles. Rouen fell after a brutal six-month siege, where Henry famously refused to let the starving French citizens leave the city, forcing them to eat horses, dogs, and eventually grass before surrender. By 1420, the French were broken

But the story of is also a tragedy of untimely fate. The warrior king had always driven himself ruthlessly. While campaigning against dissident French forces loyal to the Dauphin, he contracted what is believed to be dysentery (or possibly erysipelas, a bacterial skin infection) during the siege of Meaux in 1422.

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother." Full Text: Available at the Poetry Society . 3. The Vulnerable Solo: "Upon the King" For a brief, brilliant moment, it seemed that

The real Henry V was less poetic but no less formidable. He was a master of propaganda, a brilliant logistician, and a king who understood that in the Middle Ages, nothing united a realm like a common enemy. He died too young to fail.

Agincourt did not win the war; it won the respect of Europe. Returning to England as a hero, he spent the next two years raising money and men. In 1417, he launched a systematic, methodical conquest of Normandy.
