The band’s greatest lyrical trick is the double entendre. "Burning money" sounds cool, but the band (especially the Atlanta chapter) writes about the emptiness of consumerism.
The first significant act to use the name emerged from the warehouse district of Tampa, Florida. This iteration of the was a five-piece funk-rock fusion group. They chose the name ironically. Living in a dilapidated van and surviving on instant noodles, they certainly did not have money to burn. The name was a satirical jab at the over-produced, cash-rich pop stars of the early 2010s.
