For years, the only visual representation of Lee Child’s bestselling novels was the 2012 film Jack Reacher . Directed by Christopher McQuarrie (who would go on to direct Mission: Impossible – Fallout ), the film was a solid detective-action thriller. Tom Cruise played the titular character—a former Military Police Major turned vagabond vigilante.

The film was a moderate success. Critics praised the chemistry between Cruise and co-star Rosamund Pike, as well as Werner Herzog’s terrifying turn as the villain, The Zec.
