According to a report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the global music industry lost approximately $29.2 billion due to piracy in 2019. Similarly, a report by the Film Federation of India estimated that the Indian film industry loses around ₹1,500 crores (approximately $214 million USD) annually due to piracy.
The Indian government has been trying to curb piracy through various laws and regulations. The Copyright Act, 1957, and the Information Technology Act, 2000, are two primary laws that govern intellectual property rights and cybercrime in India. However, the enforcement of these laws has been a challenge, with many piracy websites operating with impunity.
