Before you can use any building command, you must open the cheat console and enable master cheats: PC: Ctrl + Shift + C Mac: Command + Shift + C
When players type bb.build into the command console, they are rarely typing just that phrase alone. Instead, they are activating a suite of variables that change how the building grid operates.

In the standard game, every object—sofas, toilets, trees, kitchen counters—must snap to a specific square on the floor. You cannot place a chair half-on and half-off a rug. You cannot place a tree in the exact center of a tile if it touches a wall. The game enforces a rigid sense of order.
By entering (or sometimes shortened in discussion to just "MO" or broadly referred to under the umbrella of build cheats), you turn off this collision detection. Suddenly, the grid vanishes. You can overlap items, float objects in mid-air, and place furniture at angles that were previously impossible.
