To understand why Geoffrey Merrick earned the title "The Keeper," you have to go back to 1888. That was the year Dr. A.J. Chandler (the founder of the city that bears his name) and a silversmith named William John Murphy first conceived of the Arizona Canal. They diverted water from the Salt River, transforming a lifeless cactus flat into a fertile arc of land. In 1923, a dentist named Dr. L.D. "Doc" Dameron had a vision. He bought 160 acres of that now-fertile land, carved it into five-acre lots, planted hundreds of orange and grapefruit trees, and named it "Arcadia"—after the mythical Greek paradise of rustic, unspoiled beauty.
