The year 1960 was a hinge point for the 20th century. In Buenos Aires, the porteño elite were swapping their frock coats for slim-fit Italian suits. The smoky, clandestine milongas of the barrios were giving way to glittering, neon-lit discotheques. And at the center of this cultural earthquake stood a bald, bespectacled composer with a scowl: Astor Pantaleón Piazzolla.

However, Piazzolla was also deeply curious about technology. In a move that bewildered the tango purists of the time, Piazzolla began frequenting the Laboratory of Sound at the University of Buenos Aires. He wasn't just writing music; he was studying the physics of sound.

Musically, the piece creates a dialog between the acoustic and the electric. The bandoneon—the lungs of tango—is still present, but its sighs are juxtaposed against the sharp, percussive attacks of the electric guitar. It was in these clubs—specifically during the winter season of 1960—that Piazzolla premiered his revolutionary suite Tango del Diablo and the immortal Adiós Nonino (although written earlier, it was perfected in this intimate, aggressive setting).
