No music. No narrator for a full 45 seconds – just a slow fade through photos: Staley in 1998 (gaunt), then the final shot of his apartment building in Seattle. The silence is broken by a low, sustained piano note (the intro to Frogs ). Then the narrator says, simply: “Layne Thomas Staley. August 22, 1967 – April 5, 2002.”

(later rebranded as Volver ), an Argentine cable channel, earned a cult following in Latin America during the 2000s and 2010s for its deep, unpretentious music programming. Unlike mainstream MTV Latin America, Neo dedicated hours to classic rock, grunge, and alternative metal with a scholarly yet passionate lens.

In a move that confused record labels but endeared them to fans, Alice in Chains followed up their heavy debut with an acoustic EP. Sap is a criminally underrated entry in the discography. It showed a versatility that their peers lacked. Songs like "Got Me Wrong" and "Brother" showcased the band's ability to write beautiful, folky harmonies. This EP foreshadowed the direction they would take with their masterpiece, proving they were more than just a loud bar band.
