Compared to the older "D-Formers" (the legacy tool found under the Create menu), the modern is node-based and non-linear. Legacy D-Formers required you to physically move a "cage" in the viewport. In technical terms, it is a tool that allows you to alter the geometry (the vertices and polygons) of a 3D model without permanently changing the original file. Think of it as a magnetic field that you place around an object. When you move, scale, or rotate the field, the object inside warps and bends to match.
