In the vast ocean of world cinema, some films glide effortlessly onto streaming platforms, celebrated with lavish marketing campaigns. Others, like the 2016 Israeli drama Beyond the Mountains and Hills ( Me’ever L’harim Velagvaot ), take a quieter, almost invisible route. Directed by Eran Kolirin—best known for his Oscar-nominated debut The Band’s Visit —this film is a haunting, lyrical study of middle-class disillusionment, family fractures, and the silent betrayals of everyday life.

Kolirin uses the Greenbaum children to explore the fragmentation of Israeli identity. The narratives of the children are distinct, yet they resonate with the central theme of searching for meaning in a landscape that has shifted beneath their feet.

Beyond the Mountains and Hills (2016) is a poignant Israeli drama film directed by Eran Kolirin. The story centers on David, a recently discharged army officer who struggles to find his footing in civilian life after serving for 27 years. As David attempts to navigate the complexities of his new reality, his family also faces their own internal and external conflicts. His wife, Rina, is a schoolteacher who feels unfulfilled, while their teenage children, Omri and Yifat, grapple with the pressures of growing up in a politically charged environment.
