Before the drama transports us to the fictional war-torn country of Uruk, Part 1 spends its early episodes cultivating the romance in Seoul. These episodes are crucial because they establish the chemistry between Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo—a chemistry so palpable it would eventually be dubbed the "Song-Song Couple" (and lead to a real-life marriage, though later divorced).
Dr. Kang is the perfect foil. She is not a damsel in distress. When we meet her, she is jockeying for a professorship, dealing with hospital politics, and trying to prove that she is more than just a pretty face. She is cynical where Si-jin is idealistic. In Part 1, she judges him immediately for his profession, accusing soldiers of killing people. This moral high ground, however, is immediately tested when she is forced to rely on him to save a VIP patient’s life.
