By 2008, Buika had already released Mi Niña Lola (2006), but it was Nina de Fuego that announced her as a global force. Produced by the legendary Spanish producer and pianist Javier Limón, the album strips away unnecessary ornamentation. It is just voice, piano, percussion, and the occasional whisper of a double bass. Limón’s production philosophy was radical: capture Buika’s voice in its most unhinged, truthful state—cracks, howls, whispers, and all.
