The series opens with the iconic image: “Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.” We then flashback to the origin story. Cousins José Arcadio Buendía (Claudio Cataño) and Úrsula Iguarán (Susana Morales) marry against their families’ wishes, terrified of the prophecy that they will give birth to a child with a pig’s tail. After José Arcadio kills Prudencio Aguilar for mocking his virility, the ghost of the victim haunts the couple. The episode ends with the exodus—14 families leaving Riohacha to find a place where “no one will bury the dead in the wrong cemetery.”
