The episode ends with Tomoko walking home alone at dusk. She narrates: "I just wanted a normal high school life. Is that too much to ask?" She sees a group of her classmates laughing together outside a convenience store. She walks past quickly, head down. On her first day, Tomoko carefully chooses a seat on the train, hoping a cute boy will sit next to her. Instead, a grumpy old man sits down. She internally monologues about how "popular girls" would handle this (they'd laugh it off), while she just stares at the floor. Watamote Episode 1

After the toilet lunch disaster, Tomoko arrives home and screams into her pillow. She logs onto her blog (which has zero followers) and types a furious rant blaming her "unpopular genes" and the "unfair world" for her suffering. The final shot of the episode is Tomoko staring at her reflection in a dark window, realizing that the "popular girl" she dreamed of is just a sad, lonely teenager.
